Gladys morning 2
Gladys is an old adult female Grey-Headed Flying-Fox who was found on a busy road and rescued by a passing lady who put her into a bucket and covered her up.
She has an apparent head injury and I wasn't all that sure that she was a survivor but she surprised me by still being alive every time I went to look at her in the incubator.
She's doing a lot better than I expected so I'll see if I can get an xray sorted for her for tomorrow, but, given that Adrian's flaunting himself all around Europe at the moment, I have limited vet access and even emergency care is tricky to obtain.
I don't know how she's going to go but I'm feeing really hopeful for her continuing and unexpected improvement.
I moved her to a carer's aviary so she could buddy up with other batties and maybe feel more secure and confident.
She wasn't hanging brilliantly when I left the aviary but the "meet and greet" sniffies also didn't happen while I was there either.
All I need to do now is get an xray on that swollen wrist and hope there's no fracture; she seems to be using it fairly well and extending her thumbs, so I'm feeling a little hopeful.
Tolga Bat Hospital takes donations for our batties. Tolga is an awesome place in Far North Queensland, which has charity status. By sending donations to them, they get a percentage (and deserve every cent) and they can allocate money to me for batty expenses without it becoming part of my income stream (which makes tax time difficult).
tolgabathospital.org/donate/
Mention Megabattie or Meg in the PayPal message box and the money will find its way to me.
If no message box appears, please email Jenny to tell her that the money is for me.
IMPORTANT: If you pay through the PayPal Giving Fund, can you please email Jenny with the AMOUNT DONATED and the name under which you have donated, OR just forward along the PP receipt.
The Giving Fund doesn’t charge any fees (so the bats get more money) but PP doesn’t itemise out the amount, they just send a total every month, and we don’t know if the money is for Tolga or for Megabattie.
Here’s Jenny’s email.

Rescuing a flying-fox who was on the road; this is Gladys
Переглядів 3,3 тис.9 годин тому
Gladys is an old adult female Grey-Headed Flying-Fox with worn down teeth; we call these senior citizens "gummy bears" and have great affection for them. She was found on the road and the MOP helped her into a large bucket and covered her until I arrived; I was glad that she wasn't still on the road, crawling around and potentially getting squished by passing cars. Initially I thought she had v...
Juveniles in care and going to creche; they love blossom.
Переглядів 3,1 тис.12 годин тому
Sandra's juvies, who came into care during the Blackall Park heat stress event, are ready to go to pre creche (the creche before the release cage). Pre creche gets them used to being outside, to be with a lot of other batties, and to learn about batty society and letting the humans in their life who hand raised them become part of their past. Tolga Bat Hospital takes donations for me. Tolga is ...
Two rescues, both escape: Camellia and Maggie

Camellia is a skinny little juvenile who was hanging out in a camellia tree in an apartment complex; the juveniles are resource guarding at the moment as they try to find enough food to survive by hanging out close to any food source they find rather than flying back to the colony. Unfortunately this little sky dancer danced across the sky before I could net her. I'd have liked to bring her int...
Bat rescue daily life at the moment; various outcomes
Переглядів 2,1 тис.16 годин тому
Not all bats survive to be rescued; not all bats stick around to be rescued; not all bats want or need to be rescued... Rescue at the moment involves lots of non survivors, plus many juveniles just hanging out in trees out of the colony during the day to be closer to the food they've found and to get a head start on the bigger more robust adults who will monster the little juvies out of their f...
Rescuing a juvenile flying-fox having on a clothes line; this is Luna

Luna is juvenile female Grey-Headed Flying-Fox who was found in a suburban backyard hanging on the clothes line. The family was very concerned about her and that she wasn't hanging with her wings neatly wrapped around her, and called for rescue. From her hanging position in the photo they sent me, I could immediately see that she had a head injury and was 4 point hanging (both thumbs and both f...
Rescuing a flying-fox hanging off a car head rest: this is Havelock

Havelock is an adult male Grey-Headed Flying-Fox who was found in the gutter and rescued by some council painters who picked him up with one of their drop sheets, bundled him up and popped him on the back seat of their truck. Unfortunately (for them), Havelock decided to wake up and find himself somewhere to hang, ending up on a passenger headrest. In comes Megabattie to save the day, to catch ...

In Mandi's aviary: new little rescue Delilah with King Richard.

I have some footage from Mandi with Delilah, a little Grey juvie who was cut off barbed wire by a MOP, snuggling up to King Richard who is still in the hospital cages but doing really well in recovering from the paralysis syndrome. Delilah loves to snuggle King Richard, however food trumps even her own personal hot water bottle, and she's delighted by the abundance of the buffet. I added more f...

I woke up this morning to find our little Miss Fancy Pants, Narnie Tootsie, peering out of the incubator at me; she was quite alert and happy. I'm sure that must say thankyou in their little brains when in your care. I hope elderly, beautiful Gladys improves everyday. 🙏❤

You're an angel, Gladys. Your work helping the bats is amazing. I thought that humans only can receive the anti rabies serum if they're bitten by a rabid animal, not that we can be vaccinated for rabies. Perhaps I'm wrong.

Hi Charlie Welcome to Megabattie, I'm Meg I put lots of information in the descriptions under the videos - so if you have questions, look for the answers there first. I also put the fate of the animal if I know it, at the time I put the video up. I may put updates there later if I find out what happened to the animal after it has left my care. There is also a Happy Outcomes playlist if you want to only watch videos where the bat survives; this is a real life channel and you get the good, the bad, the ugly and distressing, and even my oopsies. You can find further videos on an individual bat by searching in the YT search bar for Megabattie/and the name of the bat you want to follow. There is a community tab (like a mini Facebook page) on my channel - if you go to Megabattie home page, there is a menu bar across the top under the cover pic. Home, Videos, Playlists, Community, About. If you click on the community tab there are posts there where I can share pix and talk about some of the videos I put up and answer questions. I put up videos from Mandi and my rescue and care videos, so look to the title or description to figure out the context of the vids. Mandi doesn't rescue but she does a huge amount of rehabbing and has a lot of permanent care bats unable to be released for various reasons. She sends me the most amazing videos of her old retired bats in care; they've all got individual personalities and adorable quirks. Mandi lives 1200 kms away from me so I don't get to visit there often. I raise money for her on the videos. The rescue vids from my point of view are all mine, and if you hear me talking and see my hands in the videos doing bat care, then that's me too. Meg

I'm curious. Is there any bonding that takes place, and if so, does it last? Or are the bats docile while being cared for and then upon release it's "see ya!"?

    • @Megabattie
      @Megabattie 2 години тому

If they're in care for months there's a degree of bonding depending on the bat; there's certainly usually a degree of cooperation. But when it's time for them to go, they may look surprised to be released when you went to so much effort to catch them, that they might look at you then go: I'm outta here lady. Have a look at the "Hard Release" playlist. If they end up in permanent care there can be quite schmoozey but it's usually only the handraised batties who form strong bonds with their human. In Mandi's aviary videos you'll see the old dudes who adore a good bum scratch and time with their human mum.
